Android Operating System is the biggest OS platform that is powering smartphones (more than 2 billion currently) worldwide since 2011 and tablets since 2013. As of January 2021, the Google Play Store has around 3 million Android-powered apps. Android OS is an Open and free source software and its source code is known as Android Open Source Project (ASOP) and it is licensed under the Apache License. Android OS is originally developed by a group of developers called Open Handset Alliance under the company Android Inc. and the project was sponsored by Google. Initially, the OS was said to be developed for digital cameras but the idea was dropped due to the less market available for them.
