REST, or Representational State Transfer, API is an architectural style of softwares used to interact amongst different devices and applications on the internet, in a form that is stateless and cacheless. API or Application Performing Interface, is a computing intermediary that allows interoperability between two computers or softwares. REST API is one of the various architectural styles of APIs, famed for its reliability and anonymity. Made famous after being introduced by Roy Fielding in his dissertation in 2000, REST API quickly became one of the most widely used API styles around the world, and started being used with standard HTML sequences. Websites developed on the REST architectural style are called RESTful websites or resources.
As for any other API style, REST is defined by the constraints associated with it. There are five main constraints and one optional constraint. The ‘Client Server’ Constraint ensures that the client data is separated from the server data to provide simpler server components and thereby providing higher portability of UI across platforms. The ‘Stateless’ constraint means that the data requested from the server is broken into individual packets, and that for every access the client has to provide all the commands to completely understand the request; this makes every session independent. The ‘Cacheable’ constraint requires that every request be explicitly marked as cacheable or non-cacheable, where a cacheable request allows the current response to be used later as well. The ‘Uniform Interface’ constraint provides simplicity for the interactions, and REST uses interface constraints: identification of resources, manipulations of resources through representations, self-descriptive messages, and hypermedia as the application state engine.
