Platforms and Editions of Java

Java is available as four different platforms or editions:

1) Java Standard Edition

It’s a Java programming environment. 1) Simple

Java is simple to learn, with a syntax that is simple, clean, and easy to comprehend. Java is a simple programming language, according to Sun Microsystem, because:

Java syntax is based on C++ (making it easier for programmers to pick up after they’ve learned C++).

Many difficult and rarely-used features, such as explicit pointers and operator overloading, have been eliminated from Java.

2) Object-oriented

Java is a computer language that predominantly works through objects. In Java, everything is an object. Object-oriented programming refers to the organization of software as a collection of various types of objects that include both data and behavior.

Object-oriented programming (OOPs) is a software development and maintenance technique that follows a set of rules.

The following are the fundamental notions of OOPs:

3) Java is Platform–Independent

Java is platform-independent in contrast to other languages such as C, C++, and others, which are compiled into platform-specific machines, whereas Java is a write-once, run-anywhere language. The hardware or software environment in which a program runs is referred to as a platform. Java is a platform that is built on software.

In contrast to most other platforms, the Java platform is a software-based platform that works on top of other hardware-based systems. It consists of two parts:

1) Runtime Environment

2) API (Application Programming Interface)

Java code may run on a variety of platforms, including Windows, Linux, Sun Solaris, Mac OS, and others. The compiler compiles Java code and converts it to bytecode. Because it can operate on different systems, this bytecode is platform-independent, i.e. Write Once, Run Anywhere (WORA).

3) Secured

Java is known for providing high security to applications. Using Java we can develop virus-free systems. Java is safe because of the following reasons:

• There is no explicit pointer.
• Java programs run in a sandboxed virtual computer.

4) Classloader is an important component of Java Runtime Environment which can dynamically load classes into Java Virtual Machine. It enhances the security by separating the package for local file system classes from those imported from network sources.

Bytecode Verifier: It checks code fragments for code that could compromise object access rights.

5) Security Manager 

This feature determines which resources a class has access to, such as reading and writing to the local disc. By default, the Java language provides these protections. An application developer can also provide some security by using SSL, JAAS, cryptography, and other methods.

6) Robust

Robust’s English meaning is Solid and Reliable. Java is a reliable programming language because:

• It makes large use of memory management.
• There aren’t any pointers, hence there aren’t any security issues.
• Automatic garbage collection is provided by Java and operates on the Java Virtual Machine to get rid of things that are no longer in use by a Java application.
• In Java, there are exception handling and type checking mechanisms. All of these factors contribute to Java’s robustness.

7) Architecture-neutral

Because there are no implementation-dependent aspects in Java, such as the size of primitive types, it is architecture-neutral.

In C programming, the int data type takes up two bytes in 32-bit architecture and four bytes in 64-bit architecture. In Java, however, it takes up 4 bytes of memory on both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

8) Portable

Java programming language is Portable because the bytecode can be moved from one platform to another. It does not need any kind of implementation.

9) High-performance

Because Java bytecode is mostly native code, it is faster than other traditional interpreted programming languages. But it is slower than a compiled language (for example, C++). Because Java is an interpreted language, it is slower than compiled languages such as C, C++, and others.

10) Distributed

Because it allows users to develop distributed programs in Java. RMI and EJB are employed to develop distributed applications.

11) Dynamic

Java is a highly dynamic language that supports dynamic compilation and automatic memory management. In Java, the classes are loaded on demand and also support functions from its native languages like C and C++.
